One Hundred and Fourty Eight

Green Giant, Sewer & Overflow System, Preston.

The Giant. Oh how triumphant he is. Behold his Quad junction, Brick Interceptor tunnels and flaps enough to rival the entire red light district of Manchester (I was wondering how I could slip in yet another sexual innuendo).

This place confuses me and left us pretty baffled. After a couple of hours spent attempting to gain access via the huge 12 foot Iron overflow flaps (and getting colossally caked in only the freshest river mud), we set about locating manholes.

Frainey decided to leave in search of female interests, and literally 5 minutes after, barriers were out, waders & vis donned and down we went into the great Bowels of Preston. After walking a few hundred meters down the main 7 foot RBP, we entered the Quad Junction.

A1(left) & A2 (right)

A1 is a large RCP overflow for the river. After venturing through it, it's evident that it's in use fairly regularly. A2 is the main pipe we entered the quad junction from.

B1(left) & B2 (right)

B1 leads off to an Interceptor churning out a rather fast flow heading into a small penstock. B2 was rather gaseous, one to venture down another time.

We followed the main pipe (A2) for a rather long time. The water was clear yet it was evident it is a sewer. The pipe looked similar to that of Bazzelgettes.
